Charlie Laughlin Featured in The Gentry Lifestyle Magazine

Charlie Laughlin joined Commercial Service in 2007 to help develop the residential side of their heating and cooling business. Today Commercial Service is one of the largest Residential Trane Dealers in the state of Indiana. Charlie will tell you it’s because he works with the best people anywhere. He frequently refers to them as family.

In 2016, Commercial Service celebrated their 70^th year in business. Founded by Mike Hamros in 1946 and purchased by Jules Sonneborn in 1973, Commercial Service installed some of the first air conditioning systems in Bloomington. Jules’ son, Mike Sonneborn moved to Bloomington, Indiana with his wife Sherry in 1975 and seized the opportunity to expand the organization’s size and reputation.

Mike developed relationships with key companies and organizations in town. These relationships developed through the 1980’s and 1990’s and were the driving force for the company’s growth. By the late 1990’s Commercial Service had grown from the original 2-man service company to an organization that employed over 30 full time employees and had major commercial and residential Heating and Cooling projects throughout Bloomington and the state of Indiana. In 2012 Commercial Service partnered with R&S Plumbing to offer residential and commercial plumbing.

In October 2015, after 40 years, Mike Sonneborn retired from Commercial Service. Upon his recommendation and unanimous support from the board, Scott Rink was named President and CEO. Scott immediately named Charlie Laughlin Vice President of Residential Operations.

Charlie grew up in Bloomington, a 2000 graduate of Bloomington South. His wife Jen is a former elementary teacher with the Monroe County Consolidated School Corporation and is now at home with their 3 children Rice (9), Hadley (6) and Oliver (3).

Charlie says: “Commercial Service has a long traditional of providing highly specialized heating and cooling services to the Bloomington community. We always try to do what is right for the customer. What is right isn’t always what is cheapest. With every situation we give our customers all of the information up front. We allow our clients to make informed decisions about their home comfort and energy consumption.” When asked how he landed at Commercial Service Charlie tells us, “I studied organizational management at Xavier University. My first job out of school was with a pharmaceutical company, which didn’t last long. That career path would have required a move to the east coast that we weren’t interested in. My passion is in organizational development/branding management. The perfect opportunity came as Commercial Service was looking to develop their residential HVAC division.”
